Type 16 MCV (Maneuver Combat Vehicle)
Type: armored_vehicle
Domain: land
Country of Origin: Japan
Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
First Deployed: 2016
Overview
Indigenous 8x8 wheeled mobile combat vehicle armed with a Japan Steel Works 105mm rifled gun — designed for rapid deployment across Japan's island territories where heavy tracked MBTs face logistical constraints. At 26 tonnes, the Type 16 can be transported by C-2 aircraft and traverse Japan's extensive road network and bridges that cannot support heavier vehicles. Features a sophisticated fire control system with thermal imaging, laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, and stabilised gun capable of firing on the move. The 105mm gun fires APFSDS, HEAT, and HE ammunition effective against most armoured threats. Powered by a Mitsubishi 570 hp diesel engine providing road speeds exceeding 100 km/h. Modular composite armour provides protection against medium-calibre threats with mine protection underneath. The JGSDF plans approximately 200 Type 16 MCVs, deployed primarily to rapid deployment divisions and brigades for initial response to island contingencies.
