Overview
Peru operates the Rafael Spyder-SR (Short Range) quick-reaction air defence system, procured from Israel to modernise air defences against aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, and cruise missiles. The Spyder-SR uses the Python-5 (15+ km infrared-guided) and Derby (50 km active-radar-guided) missiles from a common mobile launcher, providing effective engagement from very short range to medium range in a single platform. The system uses an electro-optical fire control unit supplementing radar for passive engagement. Peru procured Spyder primarily to protect airbases and critical national infrastructure, replacing ageing Soviet-origin SHORAD systems.
