Overview
American main battle tank with Taiwan-specific modifications representing major Taiwanese Army armored capability modernization. Taiwan procured 108 M1A2T Abrams (Taiwan variant of SEPv3) announced 2019 with deliveries beginning mid-2020s. Features 120mm smoothbore gun, advanced composite armor with depleted uranium inserts, 1,500 hp turbine, digital systems, Taiwan-specific communications and integration. Replaces aging M60A3 and CM-11 providing quantum leap in capability. However, debate regarding utility given Taiwan's terrain limitations for armor and focus on asymmetric defense. Represents conventional capability maintaining ability to counter Chinese amphibious assault. Training with US Army enhances interoperability. Logistical challenges including fuel consumption and maintenance require Taiwanese adaptations. Critical for counterattack operations against beachheads though limited numbers restrict sustained operations.
