Overview

The Koksan (named after a North Korean city) M-1978 is a 170mm self-propelled artillery piece that holds the distinction of being one of the longest-range conventional artillery systems in the world. Deployed along the DMZ, its 40-60 km range allows it to directly threaten Seoul and its densely populated suburbs. The system is mounted on a modified T-34 chassis and is extremely large and heavy. Despite its slow rate of fire and limited mobility, the Koksan represents a significant direct threat to South Korean population centers.
