Overview
Finnish designation for the German ASRAD-R (Advanced Short Range Air Defence — Rocket) system providing very short-range air defense for mobile ground forces. ITO 05 (Ilmatorjuntaohjus 05) features Stinger fire-and-forget infrared-guided missiles on a gyro-stabilized launcher enabling firing while vehicle is moving, 4-missile ready-to-fire launcher with additional missiles inside vehicle, electro-optical/infrared sensor with automatic target detection and tracking, maximum engagement range of 6-8 km depending on Stinger variant, and integration onto Patria AMV 8x8 wheeled chassis for high mobility. The system provides immediate point defense for mechanized columns against surprise air attack. Automated target detection significantly reduces crew workload — the system continuously scans for air threats and cues the operator when targets are detected. Finland procured multiple ITO 05 systems in the 2000s for integration into mechanized brigades. The wheeled chassis enables convoy defense and rapid repositioning. Operates as part of layered air defense alongside longer-range systems. The Stinger missile provides proven performance against aircraft and helicopters with combat use dating to 1980s Afghanistan. Recent upgrades include newer Stinger variants with improved seekers.
