Overview
Brazilian indigenously-produced 6x6 wheeled armored personnel carrier representing major achievement in Brazilian defense industry — designed, developed, and manufactured domestically with technology transfer from Italy. VBTP-MR (Viatura Blindada de Transporte de Pessoal – Média de Rodas) named Guarani after indigenous Brazilian people. Development began 2007 with first production vehicles delivered 2012. Brazilian Army plans to procure 2,000+ vehicles across variants replacing obsolete wheeled and tracked carriers. Displacement approximately 16-17 tonnes with capacity for 3 crew plus 11 troops. Features modular armor providing STANAG Level 3-4 protection with add-on modules for enhanced protection, mine protection with V-shaped hull, 12.7mm or 40mm remote weapon station, independent suspension, central tire inflation system, NBC protection, and modern electronics. Powered by 380 hp Iveco diesel providing road speed of 100 km/h and range of 700+ km. Amphibious with preparation. Variants include personnel carrier, command vehicle, ambulance, mortar carrier, recovery vehicle, and reconnaissance version. The indigenous production represents strategic autonomy for Brazilian Army modernization without dependence on foreign suppliers. Domestic production at Iveco facility in Minas Gerais with Brazilian content exceeding 60%. Exported to Argentina, Lebanon, and others. Combat-proven in UN peacekeeping operations. Represents successful Brazilian armored vehicle development creating modern capability and industrial capacity.
