Saab ARTHUR (Artillery Hunting Radar)
Type: sensor
Domain: land
Country of Origin: Sweden
Manufacturer: Saab AB
First Deployed: 2004
Overview
Mobile counter-battery radar system detecting and locating enemy artillery, mortars, and rocket launchers through tracking projectiles in flight — providing critical fire direction for counter-battery fire missions. ARTHUR (ARTillery HUnting Radar) uses a phased-array antenna scanning airspace to detect projectiles, calculate trajectory backwards to determine firing position, and transmit coordinates to friendly artillery for rapid counter-fire. Detection range exceeds 100 km for ballistic trajectories depending on weapon type. The system can simultaneously track hundreds of projectiles and prioritize threats. Reaction time under 15 seconds from detection to transmission of firing location enables engagement before enemy can displace. Mounted on a mobile truck chassis for rapid deployment. ARTHUR has been continuously upgraded with modern signal processing, electronic counter-countermeasures, and integration with fire control networks. Operated by Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic, UK, Italy, and Spain. Combat-proven in Afghanistan and Iraq providing force protection by detecting insurgent mortar and rocket attacks. Critical capability for counter-battery operations in high-intensity conflict.
