Overview
The Virginia-class is the US Navy's primary nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, representing the most capable SSN in service globally. Originally commissioned in 2004, the class has evolved through Blocks I-V with each block adding significant capability. Block V introduces the Virginia Payload Module (VPM) adding a 28-tube TLAM vertical launch system to each hull, dramatically increasing strike capacity from 12 to 40 land-attack cruise missiles. Armed with Mk 48 ADCAP torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Advanced SEAL delivery capability with lockout chamber. Fly-by-wire control system improves shallow-water agility. Planned fleet of 66 boats to replace Los Angeles-class.
