Preveze/Gür Class Submarine
Type: Submarine
Domain: sea
Country of Origin: Germany
Manufacturer: HDW / Gölcük Naval Shipyard
First Deployed: 1994
Overview
The Preveze-class (4 boats, 1994–1999) and Gür-class (4 boats, 2003–2007) submarines form the backbone of the Turkish Navy submarine force with 8 Type 209/1400 diesel-electric boats in service. Built by HDW Germany with the final units completed at Gölcük Naval Shipyard under license. Each submarine displaces ~1,586 tonnes submerged, is armed with 8 × 533mm torpedo tubes carrying UGM-84 Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles and Mk 48/Atlas DM2A4 torpedoes. AIP (Air-Independent Propulsion) is absent, limiting submerged endurance to ~7–8 days. These submarines provide credible deterrence in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean and are being gradually replaced by the newer Type 214TN Reis-class.
