Overview
Peru acquired approximately 19 MiG-29S Fulcrum-C aircraft from Belarus in 1997 as an affordable air superiority acquisition to modernize the fleet. The MiG-29S is the enhanced single-seat variant capable of carrying the R-27ER extended-range radar-guided missile and R-73 IR-guided missile. Peru is the only South American operator of the type. However, operating the MiG-29 has been persistently challenging: the N019 pulse-Doppler radar and 1980s avionics have not been modernized, Russian sanctions following 2022 have further disrupted spare parts supply, and the operational readiness rate is reported as significantly below 50%. The aircraft operate from La Joya Air Base.
