Overview
Standard issue 5.56x45mm NATO carbine of the US military since the 1990s. Gas-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed with selective fire including full-auto capability. Over 500,000 in US service. Being gradually replaced by the M7 for close combat forces but will remain in service with support and non-combat units for decades.
