Overview

France's strategic nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) class, forming the backbone of the national nuclear deterrent under the Force Océanique Stratégique (FOST). Displacement of 14,335 tonnes submerged with a crew of 111. Armed with 16 M51 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, each carrying multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles (MIRVs) with thermonuclear warheads. Powered by a K15 pressurized water reactor with pump-jet propulsion for ultra-quiet operations. Four boats in class: Le Triomphant, Le Téméraire, Le Vigilant, and Le Terrible. At least one boat is permanently at sea maintaining continuous at-sea deterrence (CASD) since 1972.
