Overview

Indigenous heavy military transport aircraft developed for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, designed for rapid strategic and tactical airlift across Japan's extended island territories. Powered by twin General Electric CF6-80C2K1F turbofan engines producing 60,200 lbf each. Payload capacity of 37.6 tonnes with a cargo hold accommodating standard military cargo pallets, vehicles up to 8x8 size, and a CH-47J Chinook helicopter. Maximum range of 7,600 km with maximum fuel or 5,700 km with 20 tonnes payload. Features a fly-by-wire flight control system, glass cockpit, and cargo handling system compatible with international standards. Designed to operate from short and semi-prepared airfields with a landing distance of 2,400 feet. Approximately 22 aircraft planned, replacing the C-1 and supplementing the C-130H fleet. First operational delivery in 2016. The C-2 has been offered for export and was considered by the UAE and New Zealand.
