Overview
Ecuador operates two HDW Type 209/1300 diesel-electric attack submarines (Shyri and Huancavilca) as the entirety of its submarine force. The Type 209/1300 is the smallest variant of the widely-exported Type 209 family, displacing 1,285 tonnes submerged. Ecuador's submarines provide a credible underwater deterrent in Pacific coast waters and have undergone life extension programs to extend their service.
