Domain: sea
Country of Origin: Peru

First Deployed: 1981
Overview
Peru operates 6 Type 209/1200 diesel-electric submarines built by HDW (Germany) in the late 1970s-1980s — the largest submarine fleet in South America. The Type 209/1200 displaces 1,285 tonnes submerged and carries 14 SUT (Surface and Underwater Target) wire-guided torpedoes via 8 bow tubes. Peruvian submarines have undergone life-extension programmes at SIMA with updated batteries and combat systems, but lack AIP propulsion. The fleet provides strategic deterrence along Peru's 2,400 km Pacific coastline and contributes to regional military balance. SIMA conducts routine maintenance though deep submarine overhaul requires German specialist support.
