Overview
Argentine indigenously-designed and manufactured jet trainer and light attack aircraft representing Argentine aerospace industry capability and providing advanced training and light strike missions. Original IA-63 Pampa developed 1980s with Dornier (Germany) assistance entering service 1988. Pampa III (latest variant) features comprehensive modernization with Martin-Baker ejection seats, modern glass cockpit with multi-function displays replacing analog instruments, digital avionics, GPS/INS navigation, hands-on-throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) controls, improved engine (Honeywell TFE731), weapons capability with five hardpoints carrying gun pods, rockets, bombs, and potentially precision-guided munitions, and training systems. Maximum speed 460 knots with endurance exceeding 3 hours. The tandem cockpit enables pilot training from basic jets through advanced tactical training preparing students for F-16 or other fighters. Light attack capability enables counter-insurgency operations, border patrol, and close air support missions. Argentine Air Force operates Pampa across training and light attack squadrons. Exported to Guatemala. The indigenous production provides sovereign training capability and supports domestic aerospace industry. Continuous upgrades maintain capability including potential integration of modern weapons and sensors. Future Pampa IV variant under consideration with further improvements. Represents successful Argentine aerospace programme surviving decades of economic challenges.
