Brazilian 6x6 wheeled armored fighting vehicle armed with 90mm gun — indigenous design from 1970s-80s maintained through comprehensive modernization providing continued service. EE-9 Cascavel (Rattlesnake) developed by now-defunct Brazilian company Engesa achieving significant export success with approximately 1,500 produced for Brazil and export customers. Brazilian Army operates approximately 400+ EE-9 across variants. Recognition of continued utility prompted modernization programme upgrading fire control systems with modern thermal imaging sights and laser rangefinders replacing original optical sights, ballistic computer, digital electronics, communications systems, and potentially improved armor. The modernization extends service life to 2030s+. Features 90mm GIAT gun (French EC-90 F4) providing effective anti-armor capability against lighter vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles, maximum effective range exceeding 1,500 metres, weight of 13.5 tonnes enabling high mobility, powered by Detroit Diesel providing road speed of 100 km/h and range of 880 km, amphibious capability with propellers, and crew of 3. Serves in cavalry reconnaissance units conducting screening, security, and mobile firepower roles. The 90mm gun provides greater firepower than infantry fighting vehicles while maintaining mobility advantage over tanks. Cost-effective solution maintaining capability while awaiting future replacement. Represents legacy of Brazilian armored vehicle industry.
