Overview
Next-generation attack and reconnaissance helicopter being developed to replace the AW129 Mangusta in Italian Army service. Named "Fenice" (Phoenix), the AW249 is significantly larger and more capable than its predecessor, designed from the outset for network-centric warfare and manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) with UAVs. Features twin LHTEC CTS800-5A turboshaft engines with full authority digital engine control, tandem cockpit with advanced glass displays and helmet-mounted cueing system, Leonardo's advanced mission computer with AI-assisted target identification, and comprehensive EW self-protection suite. Armed with a 20mm three-barrel turret gun, 70mm guided rockets, anti-tank missiles (Spike ER/LR2), and air-to-air missiles. Maximum weight of approximately 8,000 kg. Italy plans to acquire 48 AW249 with first deliveries expected from 2027.
