Overview
The Astute class is the latest class of nuclear-powered fleet submarines in service with the Royal Navy. Built by BAE Systems at Barrow-in-Furness, they feature a PWR2 nuclear reactor, Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles, Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes, and the most advanced sonar suite ever fitted to a Royal Navy submarine. They will serve as the backbone of the UK submarine fleet.
