Overview
Brazilian indigenously-developed multiple launch rocket system providing long-range precision fires — representing world-class artillery system and major Brazilian defense export success. ASTROS (Artillery Saturation Rocket System) developed by Avibras from 1980s with continuous upgrades maintaining cutting-edge capability. Latest Mk6 variant features modular launcher accommodating multiple rocket types: SS-30 70mm (9 km), SS-40 127mm (15 km), SS-60 180mm (30 km), SS-80 300mm (90 km), and SS-150 300mm (150 km), GPS/INS guidance on longer-range rockets providing precision strike capability, automated fire control system with ballistic computer, shoot-and-scoot capability with rapid displacement, and integration with UAVs and sensors for targeting. Mounted on 6x6 truck chassis providing excellent mobility. Each battery includes command vehicle, launchers, reload vehicles, and support vehicles. Brazilian Army operates ASTROS providing long-range precision fires engaging enemy artillery, command posts, logistics, and concentrations. The system achieved significant export success with customers including Saudi Arabia (large orders), Iraq, Malaysia, Qatar, and others generating billions in export revenue. Combat-proven by Saudi Arabia in Yemen demonstrating effectiveness. Continuously upgraded with latest variants incorporating cruise missile technology and potentially ramjet-powered rockets extending range beyond 300 km. Represents Brazilian defense industry flagship demonstrating capability to develop world-competitive weapons systems. Future ASTROS variants may incorporate hypersonic technologies.
