PLA installs GL-6 APS on Type 96A tanks for Taiwan assault

China’s PLA equips Type 96A tanks with GL-6 active protection systems to counter drone and missile threats amid plans for Taiwan operations. This upgrade marks a critical enhancement in battlefield survivability for one of China’s frontline armored units under Eastern Theatre Command.

China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has significantly upgraded its aging Type 96A main battle tanks by fitting them with the GL-6 active protection system (APS). This system is designed to detect and neutralize incoming drone attacks and anti-tank missiles, addressing modern battlefield threats. Official footage released by China Youth Daily shows these tanks deployed with the new APS in the 71st Group Army.

The 71st Group Army is part of the PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command, which holds primary responsibility for operations targeting Taiwan. The modernization effort illustrates preparations for potential high-intensity conflict in the Taiwan Strait, where anti-tank guided weapons and unmanned aerial vehicles have become prevalent threats. Ensuring tank survivability is a strategic priority for China’s mechanized forces.

The GL-6 APS features radar and electro-optical sensors to detect incoming projectiles and automatically deploy countermeasures before impact. It specifically counters drones and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). Integrating this system on Type 96A tanks enhances their battlefield resilience, enabling them to operate more aggressively against Taiwanese defensive positions.

Each Type 96A tank is equipped with a 125mm smoothbore main gun, composite armor, and upgraded fire control systems. The addition of the GL-6 APS marks a substantial leap in active defense capability, shifting from passive armor protection to proactive threat interception. This upgrade boosts the PLA’s armored units’ survivability, mobility, and combat effectiveness in a contested operational environment.

This development signals China’s commitment to intensifying pressure on Taiwan through improved conventional forces.
