Pakistan Navy Commissions 2nd Babur-class Corvette PNS Khaibar
Pakistan Navy expands its blue-water capabilities by inducting the second Babur-class corvette, PNS Khaibar, enhancing maritime security in the Arabian Sea amid regional tensions. This advancement reflects Pakistan’s push for a modern, balanced naval force with improved technological and operational reach.
On April 4, the Pakistan Navy officially commissioned its second Babur-class corvette, PNS Khaibar (F-282), at a ceremony in Karachi. This vessel is part of the PN MILGEM project, based on the Turkish MILGEM design, and marks a significant step in Pakistan’s naval modernization efforts. Chief of the Pakistan Navy, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, presided over the event, stressing the importance of a technologically advanced and balanced maritime force.
The Babur-class corvettes are designed for multi-role operations including anti-surface, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime patrol missions. PNS Khaibar joins the fleet following the induction of the first corvette, PNS Babur, further reinforcing Pakistan’s naval presence in the Arabian Sea and enhancing its deterrence capabilities against regional threats.
Strategically, the induction of the PNS Khaibar is crucial for Pakistan’s ambition to secure sea lanes and counterbalance increasing naval activities by regional powers. Enhanced maritime capability supports not only national defense but also regional stability and protection of economic interests such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Technically, the Babur-class corvette incorporates stealth features, advanced radar, weapon systems including guided missiles, torpedoes, and a helicopter deck. The vessel displaces around 2,300 tons and can achieve speeds up to 30 knots. The integration of indigenous and imported systems reflects Pakistan’s growing defense-industrial collaboration with Turkey and others.
Looking forward, the Pakistan Navy plans to expand its fleet with more PN MILGEM corvettes and other modern platforms, aiming to maintain a credible deterrent and project power within the Indian Ocean region. The commissioning of PNS Khaibar thus represents a pivotal enhancement in Pakistan’s naval warfare capabilities and maritime strategy.
