Norway Awards Kongsberg, Salt Ship Design for New Warships
Norway's defense agency contracts Kongsberg and Salt Ship Design to develop a new class of standardized naval vessels, boosting future maritime military capabilities.
Norway’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMA) has signed a contract with the consortium of Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace and Salt Ship Design to design a new standardized vessel class for the Norwegian Armed Forces. This contract represents a critical advancement in Norway’s push to modernize and unify its naval fleet.
The standardized vessel initiative aims to replace multiple aging ship classes with highly adaptable platforms capable of performing multi-domain maritime missions, from patrol to combat. Salt Ship Design brings naval architectural expertise, while Kongsberg contributes advanced defense technology integration.
Strategically, this development enhances Norway’s ability to protect its vast maritime interests in the Arctic and North Atlantic, increasingly vital regions due to geopolitical tensions and resource competition. The move signals Norway’s commitment to maintaining a credible and flexible naval force amid rising regional challenges.
The vessels will incorporate modular design principles, allowing quick reconfiguration for different missions, fitted with Kongsberg’s state-of-the-art weapons and sensor systems. Exact vessel specifications have not been disclosed, but the contract includes concept development and detailed design phases scheduled over the next few years.
Moving forward, this project sets the foundation for Norway’s future sea control capabilities and regional deterrence posture. It may also influence allied naval standardization efforts and regional maritime balance in Northern Europe.
