Italy to Finalize Turkish TB3 Drone Deal Within Months
Italy plans to become the first European operator of Turkey's Baykar TB3 drone, marking a significant expansion of Turkish UAV exports into Europe. This purchase underscores Ankara's growing influence in advanced drone technology and European defense markets.
Italy is preparing to approve a procurement deal for the Turkish Baykar TB3 drone in the coming months, becoming the first European country outside Turkey to operate this platform. The TB3 drone is an advanced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by Baykar, known for its long endurance and carrier-capability.
The Baykar TB3 is a derivative of Turkey’s other successful drone models, designed for naval operations with the ability to take off and land on Anadolu-class amphibious assault ships. Italy's interest reflects a shift toward diversifying drone sources and integrating advanced UAV technology into its naval forces.
Strategically, this deal signals growing acceptance of Turkish UAVs within European defense circles and could challenge the dominance of Western drone manufacturers. It may also strengthen bilateral defense ties between Italy and Turkey amid broader geopolitical complexities in the Mediterranean region.
Technically, the TB3 features autonomous carrier landing, a wingspan of approximately 14 meters, and payload versatility including precision strike munitions and reconnaissance equipment. Its deployment from amphibious assault vessels offers Italy flexible maritime surveillance and strike capabilities.
The approval and delivery of TB3 drones to Italy will likely accelerate European procurement of Turkish UAVs and increase Turkey’s defense export footprint. It may prompt competitive responses from other drone-producing nations and reshape Mediterranean naval drone dynamics.
