Israel Signs $48m Deal for 155mm Artillery Shells

Israel’s Ministry of Defense secures tens of thousands of advanced 155mm shells from Elbit Systems, boosting artillery firepower amid regional tensions. This $48 million procurement strengthens Israel’s artillery capabilities with precision munitions crucial for asymmetric warfare.

Israel’s Ministry of Defense (IMOD) has finalized a $48 million contract with defense firm Elbit Systems for tens of thousands of 155mm artillery shells. The deal aims to replenish and upgrade Israel’s artillery ammunition inventory amid heightened security challenges.

The agreement follows recent escalations in regional conflicts, underscoring Israel’s intent to maintain a technological edge in artillery munitions. Elbit Systems is a key supplier of advanced military hardware critical to Israel’s defense posture.

Strategically, this procurement enhances Israel’s long-range indirect firepower, giving ground forces increased lethality and precision in engagements with militant groups along the Gaza Strip and Lebanon borders.

Technically, the shells ordered are compatible with existing artillery platforms such as the M109 self-propelled howitzers and the M777 towed howitzers. The contract reflects ongoing modernization efforts to integrate precision-guided munitions and increase effective combat reach.

This ammunition boost is expected to deepen Israel’s deterrence, improve operational flexibility, and prepare IDF artillery units for sustained conflict scenarios against entrenched adversaries.
