India Boots Third SSBN INS Aridhaman, Fourth Nilgiri Frigate

India expands its nuclear triad with the induction of the third Arihant-class SSBN and the fourth Nilgiri-class frigate, enhancing its strategic deterrence in the Indo-Pacific amid rising regional tensions.

India commissioned its third Arihant-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), INS Aridhaman, along with its fourth Nilgiri-class stealth frigate, INS Taragiri, on April 3 at Visakhapatnam. The ceremony was led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who signaled the event's strategic gravity with a cryptic tweet emphasizing power over words.

The Arihant-class submarines form the backbone of India's sea-based nuclear deterrence, augmenting its second-strike capability under the nuclear triad framework. The Nilgiri-class frigates, equipped with advanced stealth and sensor technologies, are integral to India's surface fleet modernization, aimed at countering threats in the increasingly contested Indo-Pacific maritime domain.

Strategically, the addition of INS Aridhaman reinforces India's commitment to maintaining credible minimal deterrence and securing its vast coastline and maritime interests amid rising Chinese naval presence and regional rivalries. INS Aridhaman, reportedly capable of carrying multiple ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads, represents a leap in underwater strategic assets.
