HII Launches Flight III Destroyer DDG 131 George M. Neal

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division launched the DDG 131 George M. Neal, the fourth Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, advancing U.S. naval surface combat power with cutting-edge Aegis systems and missile defenses.

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division successfully launched the future USS George M. Neal (DDG 131) on April 1, 2026. This ceremony marks a significant milestone in constructing the fourth Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer at the shipyard.

The Flight III variant represents the latest evolution of the Arleigh Burke class, designed to incorporate the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar. This upgrade aims to enhance the U.S. Navy's surface fleet's fight capability against increasingly sophisticated threats.

George M. Neal will join a critical group of next-generation destroyers intended to maintain naval superiority in contested environments worldwide. The Flight III ships enhance integrated air and missile defense capabilities vital for countering ballistic and cruise missile threats.

The DDG 131 incorporates major systems such as the SPY-6 radar, upgraded power generation, and enhanced combat systems. Ingalls shipbuilders completed key assembly steps before launch, including hull erection, outfitting, and systems integration, to prepare the destroyer for subsequent trials.

The addition of DDG 131 is expected to strengthen U.S. and allied naval operational resilience at a time of rising global naval competition. The Flight III program's progression signals sustained investment in surface fleet modernization critical for deterrence and regional power projection.
