France’s Next-Generation Aircraft Carrier Officially Named ‘France Libre’

France officially names its next-generation nuclear-powered aircraft carrier 'France Libre,' marking a major step in European naval power projection. The carrier symbolizes Paris’ commitment to advanced maritime defense capabilities amid rising global naval competition.

French President Emmanuel Macron officially unveiled the name of France’s next-generation nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, 'France Libre,' at a ceremony held near Nantes at a Naval Group facility. This new carrier, previously known only as the Porte-Avions de Nouvelle Génération (PANG) project, marks a leap forward in French naval capabilities.

The PANG program was launched to replace the aging Charles de Gaulle carrier, aiming to deliver cutting-edge technologies including nuclear propulsion, improved air wing capacity, and enhanced stealth features. The naming as 'France Libre' evokes both historical resistance heritage and France’s strategic intent to remain a leading maritime power.

Strategically, the carrier enhances France’s ability to project power globally, ensuring a strong blue-water naval presence in contested maritime domains such as the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean. It also signals increased commitment to NATO and European defense initiatives as maritime tensions grow.

The new carrier is expected to displace around 75,000 tons, equipped with the latest Rafale M fighters, unmanned air systems, and advanced missile defense systems.
