European Parliament Sends Delegation to China After 8 Years

The European Parliament is sending a seven-member delegation to China next week after an eight-year pause in official visits. This group, led by Engin Eroglu, head of the parliament’s China delegation, includes members from the Internal Market and Consumer Protection committee. They will engage with Chinese officials, customs and port authorities, lawmakers, and major e-commerce companies including Shein and Temu.

EU-China relations have been strained over issues such as human rights, trade imbalances, and security concerns. The European Parliament had suspended high-level exchanges in response to China's sanctions against MEPs and European entities. The renewed delegation visit marks a strategic recalibration within the EU to manage its complex economic and political ties with China.

This delegation reflects Beijing’s sustained lobbying efforts targeting European lawmakers to influence EU policy and perceptions. Strengthening direct dialogue and engagement with business and regulatory authorities is intended to ease tensions and open new avenues for cooperation, especially in trade and consumer protection.

The visiting team will focus on supply chain security, market access issues, and regulation of major Chinese e-commerce platforms.
