Emanuel Warns Iran Sees Strait Closure as 'Nuclear Option'

Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel highlights Iran’s recognition of the Strait of Hormuz blockade as a decisive strategic weapon. This underscores heightened risks of regional escalation amid US-Israeli hostilities with Tehran.

Rahm Emanuel, former mayor of Chicago, declared on Wednesday that Iran has discovered that blocking the Strait of Hormuz is its “nuclear option.” This statement comes as tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran approach one month, marking a critical point in the regional crisis.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime chokepoint through which roughly 20% of global oil trade passes. Iran has long threatened to close this narrow waterway in response to sanctions and military pressures. Emanuel’s comments emphasize the strategic weight Tehran places on this threat as a last-resort deterrent.

Strategically, controlling or disrupting access to the Strait of Hormuz would have a massive impact on global energy markets and international security. The prospect of Iran employing this ‘nuclear option’ heightens the risk of a broader conflict involving regional and global powers dependent on Gulf oil supplies.

Technically, the Strait is approximately 39 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, heavily monitored by Iranian Revolutionary Guard naval forces equipped with fast attack boats, submarines, and shore-based missile systems capable of targeting commercial and military vessels. Iran’s asymmetric naval capabilities enhance its ability to enforce a blockade despite conventional naval superiority by US and allied forces.

If Iran acts on this threat, it could trigger severe disruptions in global oil prices, military confrontations in the Arabian Gulf, and strained relations among major powers. The international community must prepare for rapid escalation and seek diplomatic channels to prevent the closure of this critical maritime passage.
