Belgium Commissions Third Castor-Class Patrol Vessel Vega

Belgium expands naval patrol capacity with third Castor-class vessel, enhancing North Sea security and coastal surveillance. This reinforcement reflects rising regional maritime tensions and growing EU focus on naval readiness.

On April 2, 2026, French shipbuilder Socarenam launched the BNS Vega (P-903), the third Castor-class coastal patrol vessel for the Belgian Navy. Following its float-out from the dry dock, the vessel has entered the dockside fitting-out phase to complete construction and equipment installation.

The Castor-class vessels represent Belgium's ongoing program to modernize its coastal security fleet, following the earlier launches of BNS Castor and BNS Pollux nearly a decade prior. These vessels are designed to enhance maritime patrol, search and rescue, and interdiction operations in Belgian territorial waters and beyond.

Strategically, Belgium's augmentation of its naval patrol fleet addresses rising challenges in the North Sea, including illegal fishing, smuggling, and potential Russian naval activity. Increasing patrol assets align with EU policies emphasizing maritime domain awareness and collective security.

The Castor-class design features a 44-meter length, high maneuverability, and modular mission payloads. Equipped with advanced radar, communication systems, and a 20mm autocannon, these vessels can operate efficiently in coastal surveillance and rapid response roles. The BNS Vega continues this pattern with updated systems reflecting recent technological advances.

Belgium’s decision to commission the third vessel signals a commitment to sustained maritime security enhancing NATO and EU naval presence regionally. Continued upgrades and patrols will likely contribute to deterring illicit activities and reinforce multinational naval cooperation in Northern Europe.
