Babcock Launches Second Type 31 Frigate HMS Active

Babcock's launch of HMS Active marks a critical milestone in the Type 31 frigate program enhancing UK naval capabilities amid rising global maritime tensions.

Babcock has successfully launched HMS Active, the second Type 31 frigate, completing a vital float-off phase at its Rosyth shipyard. This event follows February’s launch of the first frigate, continuing the UK’s push to modernize its naval fleet.

The Type 31 programme aims to deliver versatile frigates capable of multiple roles including anti-submarine warfare, escort duties, and maritime security operations. This initiative reflects the UK's strategic intent to maintain a robust presence in contested waters worldwide.

HMS Active, an Inspiration Class vessel, incorporates advanced modular design for rapid upgrades and mission adaptability. The ship displaces approximately 5,700 tonnes and can reach speeds over 28 knots, equipped with versatile weapon systems and advanced sensors coordinated by Defence Equipment & Support engineers alongside Royal Navy crews.

The technical sophistication of the Type 31 includes a flexible weapons fit with plans for a 57mm main gun, air defense missiles, and anti-ship missiles, supported by state-of-the-art sonar and radar arrays. The float-off is a critical stage indicating readiness for final construction and sea trials.

This launch represents a strategic boost for the UK Navy amid increased great power competition and maritime security challenges. The completion and commissioning of HMS Active will enhance the Royal Navy's operational reach, providing a modern platform capable of responding swiftly to global threats.
