Australia Plans Local Assembly of 70mm Hydra Rockets for Apaches

Australian firm NIOA partners with US General Dynamics to produce Hydra-70 rockets locally. This move supports Australia's Apache fleet modernization and enhances domestic defense manufacturing capacity.

Australian defense contractor NIOA and US-based General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) have signed an agreement to jointly investigate local assembly of 70mm Hydra-70 rockets. These munitions are intended for the Australian Army’s AH-64E Apache helicopter fleet, delivering enhanced firepower and increased supply security.

The Hydra-70 rocket family is a widely used air-to-ground weapon system mounted on several Western military helicopters including the AH-64E. Australia currently depends largely on imports for these rockets, representing a strategic vulnerability in sustained combat operations.

Establishing local assembly capability marks a significant step in Australia’s broader defense industrial base expansion efforts. It improves sovereign manufacturing capacity for critical precision munitions, eases supply chain risks, and supports the long-term sustainment of Apache platforms in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Hydra-70 rockets under consideration are unguided 2.75-inch (70mm) rockets capable of deploying high-explosive warheads at ranges up to 8 kilometers. Their compatibility with multiple launch platforms makes them vital for close air support missions, precision strike, and interdiction roles.

If successful, this collaboration will enhance Australia's operational independence, reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, and potentially increase export opportunities for domestic defense products. It signals Canberra’s intent to build resilient, locally integrated supply chains amid regional military competition.
